Westburne's story began in the late 1920s in Turner Valley, Alberta, however did not officially become Westburne until 1951. It started as a small exploration company and made its first venture into the Canadian wholesale distribution in 1963, through the acquisition of a major plumbing and heating wholesaler in the Quebec City area. In 1971, Westburne entered the Canadian electrical supply industry, and continued to expand through various acquisitions over the years. Westburne has since evolved to one of North America's largest integrated distributors of industrial, construction and commercial electric supplies, operating nationwide.
Rexel, the largest distributor of electrical products in the world entered the Canadian market by completing the acquisition of Westburne in 2000. To continue focus on the development of the core business of electrical products distribution, in 2001 the "non-electrical" products businesses of Westburne were sold. Based in Paris, France, Rexel has presence on 4 continents and in more than 30 countries. In 2001, the Canadian operating subsidiary changed its name to Rexel Canada Electrical Inc.
In 2007 Rexel totaled sales of C$15.7 billion.
